About The Project

This North York project focused on maximizing usable outdoor space within a tight urban backyard — creating multiple functional zones while maintaining clear flow between the home, deck areas, and existing features.

The homeowners wanted a backyard that could comfortably support entertaining, lounging, and everyday use, without feeling crowded. The result is a layered outdoor living space that makes smart use of elevation changes and connects each area seamlessly.

Design & Layout

The design was centered around making the most of the available footprint. A large lower-level deck provides the primary gathering and entertaining space, positioned between the home and the basketball court to anchor the backyard.

From there, the layout steps up gradually — transitioning from the lower deck to a slightly raised deck, and finally to a small upper deck that connects directly to the home. This tiered approach creates natural separation between spaces without breaking visual continuity.

The hardscape seating area was positioned to complement the deck rather than compete with it, giving the homeowners flexibility depending on how the space is being used.

Materials & Finish

Composite decking was used throughout for durability, low maintenance, and a clean, modern look. The neutral tones work well with the home’s exterior and surrounding landscaping while keeping the space feeling open and cohesive.

The hardscape patio and stone steps add contrast and structure, grounding the design and creating solid transitions between functional zones. Every material was selected to balance performance with long-term visual appeal.

The Result

This backyard transformation shows how thoughtful design can turn a limited footprint into a highly functional outdoor living environment. With multiple seating areas, clear pathways, and intentional elevation changes, the space now supports entertaining, relaxation, and everyday use without compromise.
